Black Media Can’t Wait on Permission — Neither Can You

Every independent broadcaster, podcaster, and digital hustler building platforms in your own name read this article.

Revolt TV is proving that you don’t need a celebrity mogul at the helm to survive. Under Detavio Samuels, it’s now employee-owned — a model that puts power in the hands of the people who actually create the content. That’s rare in media, but it’s exactly the type of bold experiment we need to pay attention to.

Roland Martin’s Black Star Network is another case study. He was told “Black news won’t work online.” Fast forward — he’s pulling millions of views on YouTube and generating nearly $2M a year in advertising revenue. How? Consistency, professionalism, and staying unapologetically Black while distributing everywhere. He didn’t wait for CNN or TV One to come calling. He built his own.

Robert Johnson, the founder of BET, puts it plain: advertisers and streamers know Black people are the heaviest consumers of media. They just don’t want to pay Black-owned outlets fairly. That’s the challenge. They’ll use our audience to sell their shows, but not invest in our platforms. That’s the economic apartheid we’re still up against.

So what does this mean for you as talent?

It means:

1.Don’t wait for a gatekeeper. Press record. Publish. Flood the zone with your voice.

2.Look beyond just ads. Monetize with merch, Patreon, memberships, live events, and small business partnerships.

3.Own your distribution. Put your content on YouTube, TikTok, IG, podcasts, newsletters — anywhere people are already scrolling.

4.Stay authentic. The culture is your anchor. Speak to your people first, but invite the world to listen.

The future of Black-owned media won’t be handed to us. It’ll be built by those of us willing to grind without a corporate safety net, willing to invest in our own equipment, willing to stay up all night editing a podcast or clipping a TikTok.

That’s our advantage.

Because when you own the mic, you own the message.

5,000 Podcasts. 3,000 Episodes a Week. $1 Cost Per Episode — Behind an AI Start Up’s Plan

AI Hosts Are Being Turned Into Fake “Experts” & “Influencers”

I came across this article in The Hollywood Reporter (link here) about an AI company pumping out 5,000 podcasts, 3,000 episodes a week, at a cost of just one dollar per episode.

Now listen—there are people every single day trying to find new ways to scale in this podcasting game. And if we’re not careful, we’ll get left behind. The truth is, there are no rules in podcasting. No idea is off the table. The only limit is your imagination.

When I saw this article, I said to myself, “Oh my God, people are really pushing the limits.” Here’s what they’re doing:

  • Flooding the zone: 5,000 shows, 3,000 new episodes weekly. It’s not about originality—it’s about volume and search engine traffic.

  • Cheap to produce: $1 per episode. Just 20 listens can cover costs because the ad money kicks in.

  • AI hosts: Fake “experts” in food, gardening, sports—personalities that can be cloned, scaled, and marketed as influencers.

  • SEO-driven content: Shows with names like Whales or Pollen Report just to ride trends.

  • Test at scale: Launch five versions of the same show with different titles, see what works, then double down.

  • Cross-media hustle: Start with podcasts, then move to social clips, short-form video, and influencer branding.

That’s not creativity—that’s a content factory. Automated. Soulless. Scaled up with no heart, no human touch.

So what do we do?

We flip the script.

  • Less is more. Quality + trust beats quantity + noise.

  • Position human shows as premium. Nobody can replicate your lived experience.

  • Lean into connection. History, mentorship, real stories—that’s what sticks.

  • Be the trusted voice in the chaos. People want guidance, not noise.

  • Own community storytelling. AI can’t touch it.

  • Remember: AI can scale quantity, but only you can scale trust.

At the end of the day, only a living, breathing soul can truly connect with another one. And that, my friends, is the real advantage.

9 Ways to Spark Your Independent Media Movement

1. Be the New Local Newspaper. Podcasts can replace dying local newspapers. You can be the one who covers city council meetings, community festivals, and local elections. Start with audio — then add video, newsletters, and live events.

  2. Team Up with the Right People. Link up with other media folks, but choose wisely. You don’t need energy-drainers complaining about money. You need visionaries who want to build. Split the workload, share your audience, and grow together.

  3. Stop Asking for Permission. The gatekeepers are gone. Nobody is stopping you from pressing the record button. Publishing an article, or streaming live. This is your independently run media.

  4. Build Direct-to-People Media. Cut out the middleman. No corporate boss. No advertiser telling you what not to say. Go straight to your audience, let them fund you, and let them spread the word.

  5. Don’t Copy Corporate Media. Don’t waste your independence trying to sound like CNN or NPR. People want something real, raw, and relatable. Talk how you talk. Cover what you care about. That’s how you build an audience.

  6. Make Local Businesses Your Partners. Forget chasing national ad dollars. Go to the small businesses in your city. Offer affordable ad spots and sponsorships. If you help them grow, they’ll keep you alive.

  7. Cover What Others Ignore. Tell the stories about Black neighborhoods, rural America, immigrant communities, or poor working-families. Mainstream media overlooks them. That becomes your strength.

  8. Be Consistent. The worst thing you can do is stop showing up. Release weekly. Post daily. Go live often. Momentum creates trust, and trust creates revenue.

  9. Build for the Long Game. This isn’t about going viral once. This is about creating a self-sustaining, community-owned media empire that will outlast PBS, NPR, and CNN. Build it strong. Build it independent. Build it now.

“After PBS Layoffs, the Future of Public Media is in Our Hands”

The recent layoffs at PBS — 34 staffers this week, nearly 100 positions over the last few months — represents the unraveling of a promise: that public media would always be a space for education, culture, and independent journalism free from commercial influence. With Congress voting to stop federal funding for the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and CPB set to shut down at the end of September, PBS is scrambling to survive. Budgets slashed by 21%, hiring frozen, independent voices eliminated. The repercussions will be felt most in rural towns and small markets where public stations are often the only non-commercial media outlet.
But here’s the truth: public media will not be saved from Washington. Its survival will depend on communities, and independent builders. Laid-off PBS journalists, producers, and technicians now face a choice. They can either wait for legacy media or they can channel their skills into a new wave of community-owned journalism — podcasts, newsletters, video channels, and local cooperatives. I love this option! The future of independent journalism will not be televised in the same way. It will be streamed, crowdfunded, and directly supported by the public. This moment will force communities to become their own media producers. The message is clear: If we value independent media, we must fund it ourselves

The Deep Connection We Are Longing For

The deep connection we long for with others is built on a series of silent agreements. How many great things—big and subtle—do we share in common that allow us to say “yes” to each other? That “yes” creates trust. And trust is the glue that bonds us together, sometimes in an instant. It only takes a microsecond to feel safe enough to be vulnerable in the presence of sameness. The vibration matches. The frequency tunes perfectly. And suddenly, the bond is like a favorite song you never get tired of hearing. Human connection is sacred. To find a bleeding heart, a spirit full of humility, and a soul that shows genuine gratitude—that’s what we all want. To be loved back by the people you love is the most beautiful thing. This is the experience I chase every time I open the mic. I’m speaking to the people I love. I’m sending love in the pitch of my voice. You can hear it in my throat, moving like spiritual electricity, searching for the hearts that are ready to receive it. What I offer can only be received by those tuned to the same frequency. And when they hear it, they know. I am me. You are you. The only way to connect with those who are searching for me is to show up fully as myself—every single time I speak. The truth of who I am is a homing device, calling out to my tribe scattered across the universe. They may not know me yet, but when they finally hear me, they’ll know: I belong to them.
