The Most Uncopyable Skill in Broadcasting: Radical Transparency And Show Preparation

One of the greatest skills you can develop early in your career is being comfortable with people disagreeing with you.

Look — we don’t all think the same. And we’re not supposed to.

Stop looking for people to agree with you.

Stop making statements you don’t even believe. Ever. Why are you doing that? That’s fear talking. And Fear always gets exposed on the air.

Only say what you can defend. If you can’t defend it, you’re going to get embarrassed — quickly.

Go over your talking points. Tighten them. Make them as bulletproof as possible.
And stop being lazy with your show prep.

Surface-level comments keep you mediocre. They make you uninteresting to listen to. People tune you out fast when you’re not giving them something to consider.

A lot of people are paralyzed by the fear of being judged by others. Callers. Listeners. Management. That fear is crippling this industry.

Some of you think that if a group of listeners calls in and complains, you automatically need to apologize on the air. No. What you need to do is know what you’re saying before you say it.

Back it up with facts. Or back it up with strong opinions that have layers to them.

When you keep repeating yourself, that’s how you know there’s nothing left in the tank.

Don’t just say, “I feel this way about Diddy.”
Say, “I feel this way about Diddy — and here’s why.”
Number one. Number two. Number three.

Be authoritative.

You’ve got to learn how to rehearse your thoughts and articulate them. Stop pretending you don’t need to write things down. That’s lazy. And it’s amateur.

Prepare. Prepare. Prepare.

I don’t know how else to say it.

If you want to be a pro — write it down.
If you want to be an amateur, keep skating by on lazy preparation and see where that takes you in your career.

Study how NFL teams prepare for Sunday. Film. Notes. Reps. Strategy. Obsession.

That should tell you everything you need to know.

We need to apply those same principles to how we prepare for our daily shows.

If you want to stand out — this is how you do it.

Nobody can copy your life.

Nobody can copy your preparation.

Do the work.
Say what you mean.
And speak with authority.

That’s how you become an elite radio pro.

“Strong Hosts Need Strong Co-Hosts: Not Cheerleaders”

In putting together your new podcast or radio show, find people who love to debate. Find people who are independent thinkers. Do not hire yes-men or yes-women. When everybody agrees with the host all the time, that is boring.

Have a spirit of cooperation on the show, yes — but still encourage people to think for themselves. Everyone must have their own opinions. You need people who can say, “I think this, and here’s why.” Encourage your team not to be afraid to challenge a thought they disagree with.

If you open your mouth on the show, you better be ready to articulate what you believe. That alone makes your show interesting to listen to.

You need co-hosts who are not afraid to disagree — and who don’t take it personally when their point gets debunked by a more thoughtful explanation. It’s perfectly okay to say, “I didn’t think about it that way. That makes sense.”

If the whole team agrees on an issue, cool.
If you don’t agree, that’s cool too.

The host must be strong, surrounded by strong people. The host is the quarterback. He executes the plays. A great quarterback knows how to distribute the ball to the playmakers. That’s what makes a show work. And sometimes the QB will keep the ball and run it himself.

It all comes down to teammates trusting each other.

Encourage each other to amplify the good things — especially when that magical chemistry starts bubbling over the air. When everyone on the show justifies their existence, your listeners will tell you"I just love listening to you guys".

When everyone in the studio is rooting for each other to be themselves, that’s when the ratings show up in Nielsen and the podcast numbers explode.

And please: don’t copy other shows. You can admire them from a distance, but originality is the key. Why do a prank phone call like everybody else? Why don’t you believe the real you is good enough?

(And for the record: I hate prank phone calls.)

How to Master Your On Air Responses

When someone challenges you on the air to prove your point, why do you react the way you do?

You’re in a position where you don’t want to sound unintelligent in your response. Your mind starts spiraling. You stumble on your opening. Then you start rambling, gambling with sentences that have little to do with the topic. Your palms get sweaty. You feel that intense need to prove yourself — but you’re drowning.

Remember this: what you don’t own, owns you.

Maybe the reason you can’t clearly defend your position is because your belief system isn’t anchored in what you said. This is what happens when you speak on things you have no real connection to. You’re detached from your own words — and now someone’s called you on it.

Be a Student of Your Own Mind

Get in the habit of studying how you think and why you think that way.
Speak boldly, and never betray yourself when you speak. Only say what you mean and can defend.
Speak with clarity, and stay within the boundaries of what you can clearly articulate.

These are some of the ingredients for mastering every response that leaves your lips.

Own Every Word

Your responses shouldn’t come from someone else’s mind — they should come from your own.
If your words are born from your own thoughts, you can never be caught off guard.

Take ownership of what you say. Live and die by your words — and know exactly why you said them.

Let People Hear the Real You

Sometimes we’re afraid to let people know what we really think. But every day, you’re forming opinions about people, places, and things — that’s natural.
Your audience wants to hear your take, your truth, your perspective.

Don’t let fear trap you. Don’t hide. Don't stumble over your words, just say it. When you don't speak your truth, people will embarrass you on your own show. So on your show or as a guest, say what you mean with clarity. Start eliminating the practice of trying to search for the perfect words to say, just say what you mean.
That’s why you’re on the air in the first place — to give voice to what others only think. Say what you think the first time. No more beating around the bush.

Top Performing Radio Shows Are Diligent About Show Prep

Your only job, five days a week, is to challenge yourself to deliver remarkable content — the kind that makes your listeners attach themselves to your vibe. Preparation is the difference-maker. When you’re prepared, your audience will not only grow… they’ll endear themselves to you and stick around.

Take a topic everyone is talking about and go three to five layers deeper. Find the angle nobody else sees. No Surface talk!— anybody can do that. The real value is down in the layers.

And please — don’t ever let “Well, we’ll just have to wait and see…” come out of your mouth. Tell them what you think. Tell them how you believe things will turn out. Lay out the next steps. Be proactive. Don’t be lazy with your opinion. That’s what they tune in for — your mind.

Read and research more than anybody else out here. Make it your business to know more so you can say more — with depth, and conviction. Surface dwellers are mediocre parrots. Don’t you dare be one of them. Do the work that separates you from average talent.

Think like a world-class athlete. NFL players spend the offseason and every single week studying the playbook, conditioning their bodies, working in silence to perform in front of millions. You must apply that same mindset to researching and prepp
ing your show.

You’re building yourself into a world-class personality.
That’s the goal — and it should be the only goal.

Is Your Listeners Investment in Time With You Worth It?

A fair exchange is when you get something back equal to what you gave up. That exchange we are talking about now is TIME. If I give you my precious time that I cannot ever get back, I should have the assurance that I am going to get back something of value. When people spend time with us, we should never take that for granted. Every moment which is calculated measurement (every 90 seconds) should not be wasted. We must be conscious of time. It is a measurement we can never get back, that's why wasting time is dangerous. So when you are broadcasting, writing, or just talking in general, try not to waste people's time, and certainly don't let people waste yours.

So take more care in how you put your show together. Cancel all those extra words you use to make yourself sound like you are smart (smile) and just get to the point. You don't need a big build up. Just tell me what you want me to know upfront and then expound on it. Wasted words, wasted moments make you a mediocre communicator.

Let's intentionally move away from taking so long to make our points. This will make you a better speaker than 99 percent of your contemporaries. It's just not necessary to take so long to make a point. Impact statements are allowed. They have no expiration time limit.

Non impactful statements do.

Storytelling, Vulnerability, and Emotional Truth Are What Make a Podcast or Broadcast Memorable

How is a radio personality or podcaster identified in the heart of a listener? There was a moment where you said something, and how you said it, that was printed in that person's mind. Here is what the listener says about your relationship...That's my dude, or that's my girl. Now hey have made you their possession. When you meet them in person, they will tell you almost word for word the conversation that touched them that created that bond. When you do that over and over and over again, the likelihood of you getting that same reaction is great. Touching your listener emotionally is the key.

With storytelling your audience will lean in when you paint a picture with words. Share the intimate details that make it worth telling your story.

Vulnerability creates trust  and people will people feel safe with you when they know you are really sharing your life with them. Surface-level chatter fades instantly.

Emotional truth and sincerity has more impact than a polished script. Being honest and sharing a personal story makes conversations more powerful. Please send me your thoughts at podcastlikeaproclass@gmail.com

Freedom Over Corporate Control

I’m not built for corporate cages. I want to say what I think, and how I feel, and mean every word of it. There’s a cost to that honesty in corporate media today. You see it everywhere. Question is, are you gonna let this happen to you?

I’ve been out here on my own for a long time now, building my life and my work without a boss. The idea of going back to having a manager over me makes my stomach turn. Managerial talk is not for me. Never has been for a long time. I asked myself, well what are you gonna do about it BJ?

Well, Being Free is important to me in my next level of broadcasting. I want to be free to create all the time, to use my voice exactly the way I want to. Not to chase corporate approval or to live for the dopamine of public celebration. I just wanna be be all the time. If you’re hooked on being attached to brands, you’ll bend in ways you won’t even recognize just to get a check. And that’s the trade: money at the price of your mouth and your mind. When you decide that's not what you want to do anymore, there is a trial waiting for you.

If you want to keep your voice, you gotta go digital. Let the market — not a marketing department — decide if your voice matters. Put your work out there. Let a real tribe find it. That’s how independence is done. Nobody in a boardroom gets to tell you what you can or can’t say. The only judgment that counts is whether people out here actually listen to you. And then, can you give them a reason to listen to you?

See a lot of people say they want to be free, but if you are not willing to come face to face with poverty, then you are not ready for that challenge. You will have to go to a place of no return. True freedom is walking through the door of no return. There is trouble in there. Things that you never expected will come up. If you are not willing to lose things, do not go through that door. One day I will share with you what is in that door from my personal experience with no shame.

If you want to be free,  you must be willing to go through whatever it takes. I believe God is with me in my deep desire to be independent. That's how I move. You gotta feel that certainty in your chest when you decide whether if freedom is worth the trouble. But you must be tested. You must not be afraid to lose things in order to be truly free.

Being independent on every level takes work, humility, and unshakeable faith in yourself. It means sometimes you won’t get the cushy check or the applause of corporate folks. You will learn how to monetize your work without selling your soul. It means building relationships, being useful, and making things people need. It means learning platforms, building email contacts, learning how to sell without groveling.

There are people who can’t imagine giving up the corporate way of life, and that is fine if that's how you see your life playing out. Corporate life offers stability and a paycheck on schedule. But ask yourself this: at what cost?

I’m not against corporate success. I just want to be successful on my own terms. I want to make money, build things, and walk in peace on my terms. I want an honest life over a compromised life. When you want things on your own terms YOU MUST ACCEPT WHAT COMES WITH IT.

So what about you? Do you want to build something that belongs to you? If freedom matters to you the way it matters to me, start thinking like an owner. Start creating. Start learning about who you really are.

Freedom is paid for in late nights, hard lessons, and bets you have to make with your own heart on yourself. I’m willing to pay that price because I’d rather keep my voice,...
because it belongs to me alone. My voice belongs to the people on this earth that want truth from an uncorrupted heart.

Stay free. Stay honest. And if you’re serious about it, get digital — let the world decide if your voice matters. Trust what you have been given as your talent from the creator.

Prep Wins in the Dark (The 3am Advantage)

Everyone hears the punchline at 8am. Nobody sees the drafts at 3am

Shows don’t win on-air—they win in the quiet hours before air. The difference between “I kinda agree” and “Man, I was thinking the same thing!” is prep. Prep that sharpens your angle so your take stance in the world. You cut through the noise.

At 3am, the world is off. Just you, a blank page, and a question: What is the most honest angle I can bring to this story?

That’s where originality lives.

The Work Behind the Scenes Is What Makes the Show

Every good show—whether it’s radio, TV, or podcasts—runs on prep, timing, and emotional connection.

Different formats, same ingredients. That’s the secret to holding someone’s attention.

Anybody can repeat headlines.
Anybody can regurgitate the same tired phrases you hear on cable news or social media.

But when you take time to think—to find a fresh angle, a new metaphor, a perspective nobody else has—you stand out.
That’s when people call you saying, “I was thinking the same thing.”

The question is: how many angles can you see in one story?

What lens are you looking through? Are you giving your audience a reason to lean in?

Prep is the difference. Prep is what separates noise from connection. And the only way to stand out—always—
is to be yourself.

Legacy Radio Personalities: It’s Time to Go Digital

I want to speak directly to my Legacy Radio Personality friends — the ones who built their names and careers on-air and left an imprint on the culture of Black Radio. We have to fully embrace the digital forms of communication now. What we did on terrestrial radio, we must transfer to digital platforms. This is what business thinkers call a blue ocean moment — where you step into a space with little to no competition, because what you bring to the table simply can’t be duplicated. Nobody can compete with you. All you’ve got to do is execute what you already know how to do. That means taking the time to learn social media and AI. These are the next tools of our craft. We are not going back to the old way of doing things. That era was epic, and it defined us. But now, it’s time to go to the next level and build your own tribe digitally And let me be clear: you are not done building your legacy. Legacy is not something that sits in the past. Legacy is what you continue to shape, innovate, and pass on. What Makes a Legacy Radio Personality? Longevity & Consistency – Decades on-air, often 20 years or more, maintaining a voice people trust and recognize. Cultural Impact – Helping shape the soundtracks, conversations, and identity of a city, region, or even the nation. Audience Loyalty – Building multigenerational followings. People grew up with you, and their children know your name or voice. Recognition & Respect – Halls of fame, industry awards, or simply being regarded as a trailblazer who opened doors for others. Community Role – Tied into civic life, championing causes, hosting events, mentoring, and being “the voice” of a city. Signature Style – A unique delivery, humor, storytelling, or interviewing style that no one else can duplicate. Industry Influence – Training and inspiring the next wave of broadcasters, setting trends, and carrying radio’s DNA into other media.
The Next Chapter Everything you’ve done that made you a legacy is exactly what makes you dangerous in this new digital age. You know how to connect. You know how to tell stories. You know how to build community. All digital does is give you a bigger stage. So don’t stop. Don’t retreat. Don’t just look back on the “glory days.” You’ve got more in you. Legacy is built by those who keep innovating. This is your moment. Let’s go build.
