PBS Layoffs: It's Time to Build Your Own Media Company

PBS just let go of 34 staffers because Congress snatched federal funding. The Corporation for Public Broadcasting is shutting down. The writing has been on the wall for years. If we’re waiting on them to keep public media alive, we’ll be waiting forever. This is a defining moment. If you’ve ever worked in media — radio, TV, podcasts, writing, producing — your skills are needed right now. The door is wide open for independent media, community newsrooms, and everyday voices to step up and fill the gap. Here are some ideas: 1. Launch Now Don’t sit around planning for two years. Start the podcast. Start a YouTube channel. Write on Substack. Stream a local show. Don't let any employer stop your career. Your community needs your voice back on the air. Podcasts are replacing local news
papers. That seems easy to do. (I will share my thoughts later on how a local news podcast could challenge talk news radio in your city). 2. Get a team if you can, Not so much Solo: Partner with other laid-off media people. Make sure you are like minded individuals. You don't need a complainging person worried about money while you are getting started. Share your resources, grow your audience together, and split the revenue when it comes. 3. Funding for the Movement The people will support what they believe in. The money is out there when you build with your community. 4. Own the Local Story Corporate media doesn’t care about your neighborhood, your school system, or your small businesses. That’s your lane. Step in and become the outlet that truly represents the people right around you. Help them create stories about what they do. 5. Think Bigger Imagine a nationwide network of independent voices that control the narrative, the funding, and the distribution. That’s the future. It’s your turn to be your own boss. Embrace independence! Let’s build what we need.
