Practicing: The Hidden Edge Every Broadcaster (Communicator) Needs

Great broadcasting doesn’t just happen. The tool that separates good from unforgettable is practicing daily. Practicing elevates your ability to conversate on another level. Being intentional about practicing forces growth and confidence. For me, one of the most important things I have done in my later years of development as a communicator has been the power of reading and writing every day. A daily habit of one to two hours of reading and writing will translate directly to your on-air performance. Why: Readers recall words faster. In conversation, they never run out of things to say. Readers articulate with clarity. Sentences flow naturally and ideas connect. Writers grow their voice. The words they write down become their talking points, giving them confidence when they speak. Writing pairs with reading to build your language catalog. Over time, you’ll notice words you wrote earlier showing up in your natural speech. That’s how practice works—what you plant in private blooms in public. But reading and writing aren’t enough. You must practice your craft alone. Whether in your car, your room, or any space where you feel free, rehearse breaks, test delivery, and entertain yourself. These private rehearsals give you confidence. Confidence is everything when speaking. You must learn to trust that you have the ability to articulate your point of view. That’s the hidden edge. That’s how you separate yourself. Move away from mediocrity and practice.
